Indian female celebs equal pay - sipping thoughts

As we move towards a women-inclusive country, we need to acknowledge that women deserve an equal status not just in houses but also in paychecks. And we are glad to have women in power who are using their voices to talk about this. Female celebs from the field of sports and Bollywood have opened up when it comes to the pay gap and demanding for an equal pay.

Here is a list of Indian sportspersons and actresses who have taken it upon themselves to talk about the pay gap:

Ace tennis player Sania Mirza took it upon herself to talk about the discrimination in sports during the 35th Annual session of the FICCI Ladies Organisation. Coming from a champion who has won six Grand Slam titles in doubles and mixed doubles; really tells how bad the pay gap is.

“My question is why we even need to explain that women should have equal prize money with men. I want to reach that day when we don’t need to explain this.”

Priyanka Chopra

For the longest time Priyanka has talked about times when she has been asked to leave a film for standing up against the pay gap. Demanding equal pay as compared to her male co-star, she was told women in movies are ‘interchangeable’.

“I’ve been told straight up if it’s a female role in a movie with big, male actors attached, your worth is not really considered as much.”

Dipika Pallikal

India’s decorated squash player, Dipika Pallikal, in 2015 refused to be a part of the National Squash Championship over the pay gap. she refused to participate till the event agreed on paying equal prize money to both men and women players. With a ranking considerably higher than her male counterparts, Dipika is India’s highest-ranking squash player, yet here she is, demanding the basic rights to equal pay; no doubt she has our respect!

Kangana Ranaut

The actor has taken every opportunity she has had to slam the Bollywood industry for being biased towards male actors. She says women are wary of talking about it because talking about the pay gap only brings them bad PR. Yet here she is, demanding equal pay at par with her male costars; because gender should not be a yardstick for the number of zeros in your cheque.

“The industry isn’t just about the four actors who have been popular for decades. I might not have 30 years behind me. But in my 10 years, I’ve achieved significant milestones to demand a certain fee. Anybody’s film can fail and this year has shown us enough proof of that. So, let’s stop giving the opening (weekend) and closing logic.”

The Indian footballer has been talking about pay gap for years now. In an interview, she talked about one of the major problems being the lack of funds. As far as the earnings are concerned, there are no contract system and players negotiate their own salaries with the national federation (AIFF).

“There is a gap but it’s just that we can’t really compare. If you talk about Indian football, you can’t compare women’s football with men’s football because we don’t have a league to compare to. There’s no level playing field to compare.”

Anushka Sharma

Like many others, Anushka Sharma has not held back to talk about the pay gap problem women face in their workplaces. She, in one of her recent interviews, talks about women’s unequal treatment, despite them having an equal stake in work and society. And spoke about equal pay.

“If there is an actor of the same stature as me, he would still be paid more than me because he is a guy. Men can work as long as they want to, but women are only okay till they are young and desirable. If you’re on an outdoor shoot, you know that the guy is going to get a better room than you. Why?”
